How to Map Job Titles to Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Codes

Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes are used by federal and state agencies, including California's Civil Rights Department, to classify workers. This guide helps you map internal job titles to the correct SOC structures.

What is a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Code?

The SOC system is a federal statistical standard used by federal agencies to classify workers into occupational categories. The system is structured hierarchically into 23 Major Groups, 97 Minor Groups, 461 Broad Occupations, and 867 Detailed Occupations.

How to Find the Correct SOC Group

When mapping a job title like "Senior Staff Engineer" or "Lead Accountant", follow this hierarchy:

  • Analyze the core tasks: Do not rely on seniority titles like "Vice President" or "Lead". Focus on what the worker actually does.
  • Find the Major Group first: Group the employee into one of the 23 main areas (e.g. Major Group 15 is Computer and Mathematical Occupations).
  • Narrow down to the 6-digit code: For example, a software developer maps to 15-1252 (Software Developers).

Common Mapping Challenges

1. Multi-Task Roles: If an employee splits time (e.g., administrative work and professional accounting), map them to the occupation that requires the highest skill level or where they spend the majority of their time.

2. Supervised vs. Supervisory: Supervisors of professional/technical workers map to the same SOC group as the workers they supervise. Supervisors of service/blue-collar workers have distinct "First-Line Supervisor" SOC codes.

Streamlining SOC Mapping with Tallie

Tallie includes an automated 2027 SOC Code Bulk Mapper. When you import your payroll CSV, Tallie aggregates similar job titles and lets you apply the correct SOC group to dozens of employee profiles at once. This avoids repetitive manually-edited records and speeds up filing preparation.
